Position Description: New Graduate Program
Institution/Employer: Departement of Social Studies / University of Vienna
Location: Vienna / Austria
Due Date for Applications: 09/30/2009
Duration: 4 Semester
Eligibility Requirements: Open to various backgrounds, B.A. degree or higher is required for the Master program
Additional Information: In October 2009, the Department of Social Studies of Science at the University of Vienna will start a new international master programme in Science Technology Society (teaching language: English). The concrete foci of the courses offered will be announced at the beginning of the academic year: * Knowledge Cultures, which deals with the different ways in that sciences produce knowledge and how this production both is framed by and frames society. This, on the one hand, includes shifting cultures and practices of knowledge production, cooperation and competition in techno-science, the continuous re-organisation of knowledge along and beyond dicisplinary borders as well as the internationalisation of knowledge and issues of knowledge management. It also embraces more recent debates around issues such as good scientific practice, peer-review systems or fraud in science. Beyond this, the relation of techno-scientific knowledge to other societal ways of knowing and the role of techno-science in everyday contexts will be addressed. * Techno-science and Society: Communicating and Interacting focuses on the interfaces and relations between science, technology and society, their mutual understanding, but also on emerging conflicts and controversies. This implies to investigate the complex relations of techno-science and governance and to ask questions related to the ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA) of research. It further embraces to study, discuss and compare different approaches to science communication, the relation of technology and scientific knowledge to broader cultural framings and imaginaries, and the relations of techno-sciences and the media. * Politics of Knowledge and its Institutional Dimensions deals with issues of science and innovation policy as well as with the changing institutional contexts in which knowledge is produced. This includes to scrutinise changes in university organisation, i.e., the rise of university autonomy, entrepreneurship and audit cultures, and the impact of these changes on research and teaching. Beyond this, also the governance of innovation processes and policy-making around techno-science will be central issues in this specialisation.
